The first of three (so far) Mitchell encyclopedias devoted to classic movie comedians, The Laurel and Hardy Encyclopedia is the book to use to settle an argument, find out about an obscure co-star or simply browse through on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Every film is covered, along with co-stars, directors, and such diverse topics as "aircraft", "doors", "landlords" and "streetcars". Open this book anywhere and you'll find an entertaining and throughly researched article. Mitchell's Chaplin and Marx Brothers encyclopedias are equally good, though all three, due to their overwhelming scope, are probably more for hardcore fans than for casual admirers. - JB
