Other notable films: The Agitator (1912), A Parisian Scandal (1921), Foolish Wives (1922), A Woman Who Sinned (1924), The Unholy Three (1925), Camille of the Barbary Coast (1925), San Francisco Nights (1928), Stranded (1935)

Though born in Australia, Mae lived in America from childhood and was educated at a New Jersey convent. Her role in 1922's FOOLISH WIVES gave her a sudden burst of popularity, while her affair with director/co-star Erich von Stroheim provided her with an equal amount of notariaty. Mae tended to work on a per diem basis and never signed a long-term contract with Roach. Nevertheless, it was her work with Laurel and Hardy for which she is best remembered. Frequently cast as Ollie's shrewish wife, she is probably seen to best advantage in Their First Mistake, SONS OF THE DESERT, Them Thar Hills and THE BOHEMIAN GIRL. The catch-phrase "The ever-popular Mae Busch" was coined by Jackie Gleason several years after her death.
